Food Grade Baking Soda for the Kitchen and the Home

Baking soda — sodium bicarbonate — is one of the most versatile staples a kitchen can hold. Our food grade pack is refined for cooking and baking use, with a fine, free-flowing texture that measures cleanly and blends evenly.

How It Works in Baking

Baking soda is a leavening agent. When it meets an acidic ingredient and moisture, it releases carbon dioxide, and those bubbles are what lift a batter as it bakes. Common acidic partners include curd, buttermilk, lemon juice, vinegar, honey and cocoa. Because the reaction begins on contact, batters raised with baking soda are best baked soon after mixing.

In the Kitchen

  • Baking — cakes, cookies, muffins, pancakes and quick breads, paired with an acidic ingredient.
  • Indian cooking — a pinch in dhokla, idli or khaman batter for a lighter, airier set.
  • Pulses and legumes — a small pinch in the soaking water helps chickpeas and rajma soften more evenly.
  • Vegetables — helps green vegetables hold their colour when blanched.

Around the Home

The same pack earns its place well beyond cooking. Its mild abrasiveness and odour-absorbing nature make it useful for scrubbing sinks, cookware and worktops, lifting baked-on residue from pans left to soak, freshening refrigerators and bins, and deodorising drains and carpets.

Storage

Keep the pack sealed in a cool, dry place. Baking soda readily absorbs moisture and odours — which is exactly what makes it useful around the house, and also why an open pack left in a damp cupboard gradually loses its lift.
