Esgoside, more commonly known as Mogroside V, is a naturally occurring cucurbitane-type triterpene glycoside found in Siraitia grosvenorii, commonly known as monk fruit or Luo Han Guo. It belongs to the mogroside family of compounds responsible for the fruit’s characteristic intense sweetness.
Chemical Identity and Nomenclature
“Esgoside” is an alternative name found in some patent and technical literature, while Mogroside V is the designation more commonly used in scientific literature. Both names refer to the same compound.
Structurally, Mogroside V consists of the triterpenoid aglycone mogrol linked to multiple glucose units, which contribute to its high-intensity sweetness.

Natural Source
Mogroside V occurs naturally in monk fruit, a perennial vine of the Cucurbitaceae family native to southern China. The fruit contains several related mogrosides, including Mogroside IV, Mogroside VI, Mogroside IIIE, Siamenoside I, and 11-oxomogroside V.
Mogroside composition can vary with fruit maturity, cultivation conditions, and processing methods.
Role in Monk Fruit Sweetness
